Character Name: Frank Castle
Canon: Marvel Television (Daredevil and The Punisher)
Canon Point: End of The Punisher, Season 2
Age: 42
Background: link
Arrival Scenario: Free Cities
Suitability: Frank Castle has always known war, even before he stepped forward to enlist as a soldier. The violence inside of him has always pushed him into a fight, picking them when he was young and always causing trouble for his parents, finally making it into something by joining the Marines and committing to three tours. When he thought his fight was over, he returned home expecting rest, only to find himself in a new one with the loss of his wife and children, leading him onto a revenge trail that left behind an endless pile of bodies, killing criminals and crooks and rapists, everyone branding him with the name of the Punisher.
His days of fighting for any country are long since over, ever since his own had turned its back on him, and Frank won't find any encouragement to aid any of the factions in their war. However, the itch for a war means that it would be impossible for him to step aside quietly either, never knowing how to settle in the silence and always being pulled with a new reason to fight for something.
Though he may not join any leagues, Frank will likely take upon acting with his own purposes, especially when it comes to spotting any of the more troubling NPCs (or players) that stretch across the land. He won't intend to keep quiet about taking out criminals and those that would hurt the innocent, though his more exceedingly violent nature would hardly earn him any titles as a hero. At times, his personal intentions could very well cross over with what the factions have in mind or other sectors of the world that may need an aiding hand (especially with his terrible luck in getting involved in conflicts he tries to avoid), but his lack of commitment to any one group will find him potentially earning a reputation as someone dangerous to look out for, with the Punisher name possibly gaining traction in a new land away from home, all while he continues with his own internal struggle on who it is he intends to be.
Powers: Frank is an ordinary human without any supernatural or magic abilities. However, he is a former lieutenant of the U.S. Marine Corps, where he was trained in high-level hand-to-hand combat and the use of lethal military arms. He has an advanced knowledge of the capabilities and uses of firearms, known to rarely miss his targets when he intentionally aims — "one shot, one kill", as he describes it — though he can very well turn anything in a weapon, even with the limitations he may come across in Abraxas. He's a standard human capable of easy injury as much as anyone else, without any benefits aside from his natural militaristic fighting instincts.
PERSONALITY QUESTIONS
Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them. If anyone in his world was asked about Frank Castle, almost everyone would be able to describe the death of his family which propelled him forward into becoming the Punisher. After years of being a Marine and taking part in assassination hits commanded by Operation Cerberus, Frank had come home with the intention to put an end to his days of fighting, but when it was believed that Frank was leaking footage of the covert military operation's illegal activities, those in charge manipulated three gang groups into performing a shoot out in Central Park in order to kill Frank and his entire family, resulting in a massacre.
Frank's miraculous survival of the event allowed for the revival of his violent rage, aiming it at all of those involved, no matter how small or big their role in attributing to it — every member of each of those gangs, along with the masterminds behind Operation Cerberus that had tried so hard to cover it all up. It gained him a notorious reputation on the streets of New York, being branded the Punisher, eventually noted by the bright white spray-painted skull upon his bulletproof vest.
But even Frank's soaring popularity as a killer of criminals is nothing compared to the war that remained inside of him. With the loss of his wife and children came the cold chill of no longer seeking an ordinary life, with no sense of hope in moving on and finding any sliver of peace. Nights often became sleepless as the nightmares of those deaths followed him wherever he went, with the heavy guilt in believing his dark past was at fault and that he practically killed his own family, all because of who he was.
Distrust became more common ground, and though there are a numbered few that he would still believe he could rely on, the eventual discovery that his own best friend, Billy Russo, was involved in his family's murder meant that he was left with a true sense of loneliness, battling his endless demons on his own by channeling it through the violence he knew himself only ever capable of.
Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by? Though Frank is considered to be a feral killer, he still follows a very strict code for himself in who it is that he kills. Primarily, his targets include dangerous criminals, murderers, and rapists, while also killing anyone who usually has the intent to kill him. This sets him apart from other vigilantes in his world, since it keeps him in the grey area between "hero" and "villain", usually resulting in public controversy in whether his actions should be celebrated or feared.
Frank never goes after the "innocent", or at least those that wouldn't intend baseless harm upon others — especially women and children (although, while he avoids killing women if possible, he won't hesitate to pull the trigger if the woman proves to be someone truly vile). When his enemies attempt to trick him into believing he caused the murder of a group of innocent women, he fully breaks down in a fit of screams and cries, showcasing the great importance of this code and what it would mean for him to break it.
His code isn't only about who he avoids killing, but also who it is he vows to protect. He goes to great lengths to keep certain people safe, such as when he willing throws himself in front of a bullet to keep Karen Page from getting shot, and he goes on a killing rampage to rescue a teenage girl, Amy, when she's captured, affirming that his intentions aren't only in ridding the world of "scum" but to keep those that are dangerous away from the innocent.
What quality or qualities do they admire most? Frank tends to be drawn to those who carry blunt honesty and steadfast confidence. He despises liars and carries more respect for those that say it like it is, since he also has a way with speaking out what he believes to be true without much of a filter. Sometimes he expresses annoyance when someone calls out his faults, but it's those same people that he tends to gravitate to since he knows they won't make attempts to bend the truth. He also frequently admires those who step forward even when scared, often trying to push people to step out of their comfort zone, because he often knows it's the only means of survival in a brutal world.
Above all, though, what Frank admires most is unwavering loyalty, since he's faced enough betrayal in his life to be pushed into a place of isolation. But if someone commits to a code, particularly one in which they'll stand by and protect those closest to them, he tends to place more belief and trust in someone that can follow through with their words of devotion.
Do they have a part of themselves they dislike? Despite his acknowledgement of its presence and its necessity, Frank isn't always fond of his penchant for violence and has often actually attempted alternate methods to his lifestyle. When his family was still alive, he recognized how much he longed to go back to war as a soldier whenever he was home, sometimes feeling aimless and unsteady, even when with his family. It was a conflict that he often argued with his wife who would tell him that even when he was in the room, he always felt "far away" and why it had taken him so long to decide that he would quit his time as a soldier to stay home permanently. But in taking so long, everything he had done overseas had already made its mark, signing the deaths of his family once it had finally followed him home.
It's a guilt he continues to carry even when the bulk of his revenge is done, finding himself in a meeting for veterans in which he talks about "the silence when the gunfire ends" and his reliability in fighting that he doesn't know how to live a life without it. Even after months of traveling through the country, attempting to take on a different persona under the name of "Pete", when he finds himself in the midst of a fight, the entirety of himself is pulled into it, blood once again all over his hands, aware that he can never full make the escape.
What is their sign, and why? The Hermit — Frank has ultimately chosen to live a life of solitude, after his attempts at settling in with a family and becoming a part of society has ultimately ended only in tragedy and conflict. He's come to recognize himself as someone who has to live by his own code and purpose, and though he never asked to called the Punisher, he realizes it's a role he can only seem to fit towards playing. There are still a numbered few that he knows he trusts and can rely on, but Frank is also aware that he can never integrate himself into a life that's constantly surrounded by others, knowing that he'll only pull them into danger and that his purposes are meant only for him to take on. Even his internal struggles are often left to himself to figure out alone and though he could still potentially be pulled into fighting for others, his life is composed of loneliness and his own private sorrow.
